This art history course covers the use of the body in art from Ancient Egypt to mid-19th Century. The human figure has been a central subject for artists and painters. From ancient to premodern times, sculptors and painters created works depicting royalty, deities, mythological figures, and common people. Throughout history, the representation of the human body has evolved significantly. The first part of this course will explore the depiction of the human body in ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, Africa, Japan, China, and South Asia. Additionally, the course will cover significant art movements in Western art up to the mid-19th century, focusing on human forms. This course will give students an overview of how various cultures dealt with the idea of human body in art as for some cultures it was a devotional act, whereas for other cultures, it was political.
