CURATORIAL STUDIES

Curatorial Studies I (CURA305-36)

The first part of Curatorial Studies focuses on the role of the curator from developing ideas for art exhibitions to mounting finished installation. The course includes weekly discussions on current contemporary exhibition strategies as well as the practical concerns of working with artists, writing contracts, using social media and creating promotional materials including posters and simple catalogue. Presentations of local, national and international exhibitions will be supplemented with field trips to local galleries. Students develop a group curatorial project that will be shown in the Slide Room Gallery at the end of the Winter semester. Students gain experience in gallery operations by participating in openings and closing for at least one exhibition per semester. This course is open to anybody interested in the curatorial process or organizing and putting on quality art exhibitions. Some experience attending art galleries and museums is beneficial.
