This course traces the tumultuous developments in art, life and politics through the Baroque period, the Neoclassicism of the Enlightenment, the birth of Romanticism, and the beginnings of Modern Art in the Realism of the industrial age. 20th Century Architecture (AHIS 220)

This course on 20th century architecture focuses on buildings and urban designs in Europe and North America as well as some examples from Asia, South America, and Africa. It begins with an investigation of design precedents emerging in the 19th century that influenced the turn towards modern architecture. We will examine skyscraper development in the United States and the short-lived Art Nouveau movement before considering the influential architectural designs of the Deutscher Werkbund, the Italian Futurists, and Adolf Loos. The course will also examine de Stijl in Holland, Russian Constructivism, the Bauhaus, Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, and Frank Lloyd Wright. While this course concentrates primarily on buildings, it also considers urban design. For instance, it examines the CIAM and the various responses to their modernist planning principles by groups such as Team X. Finally, the course investigates why the International Style was adopted by a number of architects and architectural firms in the United States following the Second World War and how Post-modern architecture emerged in response to this style. Buildings and urban plans will be considered in terms of structural systems and construction technologies as well as the social, political, and cultural conditions that influenced these designs. Critical Studies II (ATHR 200)

In this second part of Critical Studies, students engage in a more conceptual and philosophical discourse surrounding visual culture and how it pertains to contemporary art in particular. Image-based lectures, readings, field trips and discussions introduce students to a more thorough understanding of the art world and the economic and social forces that shape visual art today. While looking at art is a fundamental part of this course, students are also challenged to develop a broader understanding of the way contemporary artwork relates to language, history and politics. Notice to “graded” students: It is necessary to have a copy of the textbook in order to pass this course. Prerequisite: Critical Studies I or permission of the Director. Professional Development (SEMR 203)

Students learn the basics of preparing professional materials such as an artist statement and images of their work, as well as how to make an artist website using a Wordpress template. The course also covers the different types of exhibition venues including commercial, artist run spaces and public galleries, as well as applying for grants and residencies. Notice to “graded” students: It is necessary to have a copy of the textbook in order to pass this course. Prerequisites: Registration in the final semester of the Diploma of Fine Arts or Independent Studies Program. However those holding a diploma or degree from another arts program, and with previous experience as a practicing artist, would be considered for this course with permission of the Director.
